Five Simple Ways to Eat a More Humane and Healthy Menu

Five Simple Ways to Eat a More Humane and Healthy Menu

I’ve had animals for as long as I can remember. The message about animal cruelty and adopting a #ShelterPet is one that has gained ground in recent years, but the ASPCA is concerned with the welfare of farm animals as well.

Here are five simple ways to become a more aware and welfare-conscious consumer when shopping for your family’s groceries.

Eat Seasonally - Eating foods in season means that you’re able to buy from a more local economy and avoid having your food ship from other countries. This means fresher foods picked at peak ripeness too!

Shop Locally - CSA’s and local farmers’ markets help support local, often smaller scale, farmers and ranchers who are producing outside of the traditional factory-farm system. If you aren’t sure where to start, visit your local farmers’ market and start asking some question - this guide will get you started. https://www.aspca.org/shopwithyourheart/consumer-resources/how-shop-farmers-market

Conquer Labeling Confusion - Marketers create confusion with their flashy labels and clever catch-phrases. But unfortunately, sometimes they care more about finances than transparency. Words like “natural” or “humane” often don’t have any oversight to actually tell you as a consumer anything concrete. However, some phrases and labels do have regulations associated with their use, and that’s what you can start to look for as a savvy shopper. Here’s a guide to labeling to get you started. https://www.aspca.org/shopwithyourheart/consumer-resources/meat-eggs-and-dairy-label-guide

Be Careful to Minimize Waste - One of the ways we can treat the animals used for food respectfully and humanely is by making the most of the food we purchase. Purchase only what you know you’ll use and serve the right sized portions to avoid wasting what your family buys.

Look for Certifications That Mean Something - Unlike marketing gimmicks, there are certain certifications and awards that have true meaning. For example, the USDA Organic label shows that the produce grown (or fed to the animal) didn’t use banned pesticides. Others include Animal Welfare Approved or Certified Humane See The Good Groceries Guide for more information about how our shopping habits impact the lives of those around us - animals included. https://www.aspca.org/sites/default/files/the_good_groceries_guide_final_version.pdf

Our family absolutely loves to cook in a slow cooker. So when we got the opportunity to try the new Crock-Pot we were elated! So I wanted to also share a recipe with you all that came straight from the Crock-Pot Cook Book. We used an older cookbook that we have used for years.

Now I will let you know that when using the Express Crock, you will need to add at least 8oz of liquid along with your ingredients if it doesn't call for it. If you do not, then the Express Crock will turn it'self off.

So now for that delicious recipe 💖

I had to improvise some of the ingredients because I didn't have exactly what it asked for but I will put the recipe exactly how it states in the book. This is not my recipe and I do not take credit for it but I will tell you, it turned out delicious and the family loved it!

Vegetable-Overstuffed Pork Chops
This makes 4 servings

First I gathered my ingredients

Prep time 20 minutes
Add the 8oz of liquid to the pan

1 Can kernel corn, drained
1 1/2 cups chopped green bell pepper
1/2 cup chopped yellow onion
1 cup Hungry Jack mashed potatoes
1/2 cup uncooked long grain rice
1 tsp dried Oregano leaves
3/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp dried pepper flakes
4 thick pork chops, about 1in thick, trimmed of fat, split for stuffing
Crisco no-stick cooking spray
1/2 tsp ground Cumin
1 cup mild Picante sauce
chopped cilantro, optional
1 medium lime, quartered, optional

1. Combine corn, bell pepper, onion, Hungry Jack mashed potatoes, rice, oregano, salt and pepper flakes in medium bowl. Toss to blend. Stuff each pork chop with about 1/2 cup veggie mixture. Sprinkle with Cumin.

2. Lightly coat crockpot with cooking spray. Place remaining veggie mixture in crock-pot. Arrange pork chops in accordion-fashion on the veggie mix. Pour Picante sauce evenly over all. Cook on low for 4 1/2-5 hours or until tender.

3. Remove chops and place on a serving platter. Spoon veggie mix around chops and garnish with Cilantro and lime juice if desired.

With the Crock-Pot Express Crock, I added 8oz of water and set the timer for meat/stew. It took about 35 minutes and we had a delicious meal the entire family couldn't get enough of. The pork chops were so tender that we didn't even need to use a knife to slice through them. Now my chops also didn't turn out as pretty as the book shows but the recipe was divine.

The Crock-Pot Express Pot Slow Cooker is so versatile that you can cook almost any meal you want. Saving time in the kitchen and giving more quality time with the family!

So give that gift of time this year with Crock-Pot and make more memories together.
