For a long time, cable T.V. has been a dominant part of our lives. What if I told you it doesn't have to be that way?

Cutting the cord to cable can be one of the most liberating choices we ever make. It not only saves us upwards of $100 or more, depending on your "package" but it gives you back a sense of control when it comes to your finances.

The average cost of most cable companies is roughly $100-$250 depending on what service your provider has you locked into, even if you don't watch half of what they have in their lineup. So what exactly are you paying for?

With streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, you really aren't losing out on much when cutting the cord to cable. So how do you get those local news channels and daily shows that you like? Well, Having a Digital TV Antenna can get you all the basics that you normally get with cable...but it's free.

How does the Digital Antenna work?

If you have a broadcast tower within 50-60 miles of your home, you're in business. Your local stations broadcast through these towers and right to your antenna.

Simply hook up your antenna to the TV and you'll have free access to local and national news, weather, local sports, sitcoms, and kids programming.

If you aren't sure about broadcast towers in your area, you can visit www.antennaweb.org or www.antennapoint.com to find out if there is one close enough.

NOT all antennas are created equal. I have tried a few antennas in the past year to see what one would better fit and have better reception. Some do great while others fail epically. One I have found to be very reliable is the UPaitou Digital TV Antenna which can be purchased on Amazon for a reasonable price.

It comes with everything you need in the package to get you all set up and watching TV. It took about 5 minutes to set up and another 3-4 minutes to search the channel lineup from the broadcast tower.

The antenna is thin and lightweight and doesn't take up a lot of space. It gives a clear picture, as long as the signal strength is good

First, you need to mount the Antenna. Find a convenient indoor location and test by scanning for channels. When you find a place with the best reception, mount the antenna in that specific place. If the broadcast tower is within 35 miles, set your set-top box to short range. If further away set your set-top box to long range.

If your reception is not that great, place the antenna higher, near a window or move it around until you can find a better signal.

Not all channels received are HD. Make sure you are using an HD tv with a built-in ATSC Tuner. Make sure that it is capable of receiving HD or you will not be able to view these channels.

By visiting https://www.fcc.gov/media/engineering/dtvmaps you can see what channels are available in your viewing area and what type of signal you can expect to receive.

Cutting the cable doesn't have to be hard. You don't get the extra channels you would get if you pay for cable but most everything can be found online or through a streaming app. So you aren't really losing anything in the long run...except for that expensive cable bill. So what are you truly waiting for? Cut the cord to your cable and save money with the UPaitou Digital TV Antenna
